The Lazarus lizards arrived in Cincinnati in the 1950s when a young boy from the prominent Lazarus family brought a handful of them back from a family trip to Italy in a sock. He released them near his home where the rocky walls and warm microclimate were perfect for the reptiles. Against expectations, the lizards thrived. Today, they’re a quirky part of Cincinnati’s urban wildlife. We pay homage to them with our Lazarus Rum.
